Hardware upgrades and important changes

Recently, many issues with the system have been noted. Thankfully resoulutions to thse problems are being made at this time and in the coming weeks. The two major errors being fixed are:

The war between local and global

The largest issue that has arisen is that you need to use a different URL/IP Address in order to even connect. This process should only require one URL.

This has actually caused problems with data loss for those who use computers that travel between two places. Obviously, this will not do.

Why is this happening?

The reason this issue happened was due to a problem with the router not supporting a feature known as NAT Loopback. Not having this feature means that if a computer wanted to use the global URL, the router would realize it, tell the server to send the data, and the server would return using it local IP adress instead. Since the requesting computer asked for "server@global IP address", not "server@local IP address", it wouldn't do anything about it, and would show soe error along the lines of "connection blocked" which isn't what is needed at all!

So, what am I supposed to do about it?

Luckily, we now have adequate equipent with support for NAT Loopback, such that this issue isn't a problem anymore! This means that you will only need one URL for access to this server: mcaesvr.hopto.org! Please bookmark this page if you come here often. Excluding Nextcloud websites, the website has been updated with a reminder that you shouldn't be using the local IP adress, for the sheer conveinience that this new URL will bring.

New servers

Lets face it: this server is slow. It is (at the time of publication) powered only by a Raspberry Pi 3B, with three external drives connected to run an entire Nextcloud instance. Thanks to the wonders of the underlying PHP in Nextcloud, this brings it to it knees.

So what are we doing about it?

Thankfully, the decomissioned server/ e-waste gods have spoken, and we have acquired a new server. It is 10x more powerful than the Raspberry Pi 3, and is more suitable for the task of running Nextcloud and PHP

So what does this mean?

This is important to know, simply because over the coming weeks, we will transition our services to this new sever and things WILL go down. More specifically, we are targeting the following days for maintanance:

12/15/23 - 1/5/24

Thats it for now, so hopefully the updates go well!
